Social Media Content Creators Driving Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Slimming Drug
A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Express Worries
However, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, legal action or prison.
Service Response and Content Removal
According to TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also discovered communities with up to 9,000 members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, populated with images of weight loss, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
After minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these groups, messages display dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Actions
A representative for Telegram stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she said.
Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the frustration, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
