An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January rose in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

However the odds had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A bill introduced on recently would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
